The Mogao Grottoes are the largest and best-preserved set of Buddhist rock art in the world, with 735 caves stretching along a 1,700-meter cliff, containing more than 45,000 square meters of murals and over 2,000 painted sculptures. Chinese President Xi Jinping made the Mogao Grottoes the first stop of his inspection tour in northwest China's Gansu Province in August 2019, and chaired a symposium at the academy attended by experts, scholars and representatives of cultural units.
