Real Madrid took it upon themselves to ensure that their position in the Champions League semifinals is completely secured. This is after they hammered the English Premier League defending champions Liverpool an overwhelming 3-1 during the first leg on Tuesday, April 6 in their final eight fixture at Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

During the clash, Real Madrid young-star and winger Vinicius Jr became the man of the match scoring a brace with Marco Asensio scoring the third final goal. Liverpool had seen this as an opportunity to revenge the 3-1 disappointing defeat during their Champions League finals against Real Madrid back in 2018. Egyptian Mohamed Salah managed to score one goal and this was all for the reds.

Real Madrid having years of experience winning the title under Zinedine Zidane did not give Liverpool a breathing space to become victors. It began with German Toni Kroos giving a long and an outstanding pass to Brazilian Vinicius Jr, Marco Asensio, scoring the second goal after a header mistake from Alexander Arnold, then finally the third goal by Vinicius Jr assisted by Luka Modric.

Klopp’s men took a better percentage of possession towards the end of the match trying to boost their chances but in vain. Their great possession of the ball did not count.

As it is, Liverpool now has a huge task in turning things to their favor and proceeding to the semis during their second leg as they will be hosting the Spaniards. Could they repeat their 2019 Champions League title win?
